The Shanghai Nanyang Model High School Symphony Orchestra offered a rare and spectacular performance at South Kent School on Monday, December 12, 2011.
The orchestra, founded in 1992, has become one of the most competitive and active orchestras in Shangahi. There are more than 120 members in the orchestra including the renowned conductor Mr. Cao Peng as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor.
Shanghai Nanyang Model High School Orchestra has successfully performed a number of well-known symphonic works, thus has formed its unique dexterous and youthful style. The orchestra has won many awards, including first prize at the 15th National Youth Culture and Arts Exchange 2004 and the 35th Australian International Music Festival.
Wang Yong Ji, who conducted the orchestra at the South Kent School, is one of the most famous conductors in China. He studied under the supervision of Professor Huang Xiao Tong. Upon finishing his composition and conducting studies, Mr Wang Yong Ji graduated with honors. In 1977 he began conducting of the Shanghai Film Orchestra that he continues to conduct today.
“We are extremely fortunate to welcome the Shanghai Nanyang Model High School Orchestra to South Kent School, said Marcus Cooper, Music Program Coordinator at South Kent School. “This is an opportunity that doesn’t happen all the time and we are thankful the orchestra considered South Kent School as one of the stops on their American tour,” he added.
The concert took place in St. Michael’s Chapel at 4:30 pm on Monday, December 12.
