When the game tipped off Wednesday night at the Williamsport Area High School, the Millionaires boys basketball team became part of the first U.S. tour for a Chinese high school basketball team.

A planning process that took about two years finally came to fruition when Williamsport Area and Shanghai's Nanyang Model High School boys basketball teams took the court.

"When I coached, we used to say Williamsport takes on all comers. Well, if that doesn't prove it," said Pete White Sr., former Williamsport basketball coach and game organizer.

The night was the third U.S. game Nanyang played as part of a five-game tour.

"I think Williamsport is excited to host a team like that and I just think it's a great opportunity for our school and community," Sean McCann, Williamsport athletic director, said before the game.

The game was organized between White and his fraternity brother, Joe Cooley.

Cooley - who used to live and work in Shanghai, China - asked White to come over to Shanghai to run basketball clinics, but White said he couldn't because of the lengthy trip.

"I've been pushing Pete to come to China to run some basketball camps," Cooley said.

Cooley said he had the idea for the team's tour when the school's orchestra made a similar trip to the U.S.

He began planning a trip and wanted White to run a clinic while the team was in the U.S. and White wanted to bring the tour to Williamsport. It turns out, they both got their wishes granted.

"If we have any opportunity to bring them to Williamsport, why wouldn't we?" White said.

Williamsport Coach Allen Taylor said he originally was upset when he heard Hollidaysburg Area was taken off of the schedule but said he was OK with the decision once he heard about the opportunity the team would have.

Prior to the game, Taylor said the contest would be a challenge because Nanyang plays more of a European-style of basketball - relying mainly on perimeter play even though they have a size advantage.

"They do play a completely different style of basketball overseas," McCann said.

"I'm expecting a different brand of ball," Taylor said, "These guys are big."

Nanyang - alma mater of Yao Ming, a 7-foot-6-inch former Houston Rockets center - possesses two players taller than 6 foot.

Taylor said the three-point line overseas is farther back than in the U.S. so it changed the way the Millionaires guarded the perimeter. He said, other than that, they didn't change a lot.

"We're not going to do anything different," Taylor said, "If anything, we're going to try and be a little more physical."

The game counts in the standings, as Nanyang is a regular high school team and follows the same age guidelines.

"It will count as a regular season game for Wiliamsport because it is an actual high school - it's not an all-star team," McCann said.

Cooley said though both teams wanted to come out victorious, it's more about the cultural experience for both.

"I think it's an educational event as much as an athletic event," he said.

"They're going to be socializing with people from a completely different culture," White said.

White believes this will be something for players and spectators alike to tell future generations about.

"It's an incredible opportunity for the people of Wiliamsport to come and watch the team play. Again, to be there to see the first Chinese basketball team to ever come to the United States is something," he said.

Though the two teams come from different cultures, Cooley believes the two are very similar because "kids are kids no matter where they are."

"They have one common bond - they're basketball players. And that common bond will give the opportunity to learn something from each other," White said.
