Williamsport hosts Nanyang Model High School Wednesday, a team of 12 players, spread evenly between seniors, juniors and sophomores, that is the first Chinese High School basketball team to ever play in the U.S. The game is the culmination of two years of organization, approvals and tying up other loose ends and should be an entertaining one since Nanyang has a 6-foot-7 player, three 6-6 players and a talented 5-10 point guard.

Nanyang is the same high school that Yao Ming graduated from and will be playing four games this week. It opened its U.S. schedule Sunday against Erie Cathedral Prep before playing St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute, N.Y., last night. It will also play Delbarton, N.J. Sunday before heading back to China next Tuesday.

There are nearly 250 million registered basketball players in China and it has become the country's national sport. Before Nanyang plays Williamsport, Jersey Shore will open the night at 6 p.m., playing Hollidaysburg.

Williamsport boys defeat Chinese team Shanghai Nanyang

An hour before they met on the basketball court, they met in the locker room. There, the Williamsport and Nanyang Model High School from China shared some laughs and taught each other words from their respective countries.

Minutes later, ecstatic Millionaires were telling coach Allen Taylor everything they learned and basking in their new-found knowledge. Yes, Williamsport wanted to win Wednesday's International game on its home court and it did so convincingly, defeating Nanyang, 60-31 in front of a huge crowd. Its the memories that were created off the court, however, that players from both teams will remember long after the memories of the game have faded.

"The kids were excited after they met their players. Those are the experiences they will never forget," Taylor said. "It's pretty exciting having the opportunity to play against a team from China."

Hollidaysburg won the night's first game, downing Jersey Shore, 68-37. Tellef Notevarp scored 11 points while Caleb Barnhart added eight points, 10 rebounds and five steals, but Jersey Shore (4-6) made only 4 of 28 3-point attempts and never led.

The Millionaires (6-5) controlled the second game from the start, scoring the first eight points and were never seriously threatened. They won their second straight and moved above .500 for the first time this late in the season since 2009, gathering momentum for a tough stretch of upcoming games.

Jahad Thomas continued played great inside, scoring a game-high 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in about two full quarters of action. Isaiah Washington added 11 points while Chris Kinley added seven points and six rebounds. Herb Stelly provided eight points off the bench and Williamsport did a nice job patiently breaking down Nanyang's zone and getting the ball inside for quality shots.

"We knew coming in that we had to be physical. Their game is a little more finesse so we knew we had to be more physical," said Washington, who slammed home an alley-oop from Syd Dowling a minute into the game. "I'm glad to be part of the first group to play against them. I hope this becomes a tradition."

Nanyang is one of the China's best high school basketball programs and has won several national championships. They are in the midst of an eight-game in two weeks stretch and played for the third time in four nights Wednesday. The Lions played in Erie Sunday and Buffalo Tuesday and are enjoying their first American experience.

Nanyang is the first Chinese high school to play in the United States and its players received a rousing ovation from the Williamsport crowd before players from both teams exchanged pre-game gifts.

"We come here to learn. To win or lose does not matter to us," Nanyang coach Liz Zuji said. "We just want the experience of playing here. We just want to learn about American basketball."

The Chinese team made a good showing despite this group having been together for only a month. Nanyang ran good offensive sets and made several nice plays while showing some good fundamentals. The Lions biggest problem was finishing when it had some close shots. Some of that was fatigue, some of that was Williamsport playing effective defense and wearing them down.

Williamsport drove Nanyang out of its comfort zone with its full-court pressure and aggressive man-to-man defense. Nanyang is still working on building depth and as the pressure increased, Nanyang grew more tired and struggled keeping up at times, although it never stopped playing hard.

"America is a very good basketball country. We could see the difference right here," Zuji said. "Our players need more time to build the chemistry and the fatigue really hurt us."

The Millionaires displayed a good inside-outside game and Stelly hit two 3-pointers. When they worked the ball inside, the Millionaires were virtually unstoppable as Thomas scored and grabbed rebounds at will. Kinley also was effective while Dowling had four assists and Ousley ran the offense well off the bench.

"It's a different style of basketball and it's an adjustment they have to go through, especially some of the rules like the 5-second call and the physicality of the game. We're more inside-oriented and they're more perimeter-oriented," Taylor said. "We're aggressive and I don't know if they see that much pressing or aggressive man-to-man. I'm sure it was an experience for them as well."

And it's one both teams likely will never forget.

Chinese High School Basketball Team Takes On Williamsport

By Peggy Lee   9:35 p.m. EST, January 11, 2012

It was a battle of two nations in Lycoming County as a high school basketball team from china faced off against one from right here in the USA.

The Williamsport Millionaires took the court to play against a team from Shanghai Wednesday night.

Organizers say this is the first time a Chinese high school basketball team has played in the United States.

The Shanghai team is here competing against five other schools, including Williamsport.

As the Williamsport Millionaires took the court at the Magic Dome, the high school basketball team seemed pumped.

And why not?

It’s not everyday you get a chance to face off against a team from another country.

“Oh yes, we’re so ready, we’re so ready. Are you guys ready?  Ya’ll ready!” said Millionaires Co-captain Sharif Coleman.

The Millionaires took on the Nanyang Model High School basketball team from Shanghai at Williamsport Area High School.

The team of twelve are on a tour to play against five high schools here in the United State with williamsport being their third stop.

“It’s a basketball city,” said Millionaires Coach Allen Taylor. “These guys get up for any team that comes in but when you get an opportunity to play Shanghai, shucks they got 20 million people just in that city alone.”

Speaking through an interpreter, the Shanghai team said it was exciting to compete against Americans.

“Coach said he knows Americans are really good country and he’s very proud that he can bring the team and then can learn a lot, especially the culture,” said translator Billy Wang on behalf of Nanyang Coach Li Zu Ji.

And the Nanyang Model High School can claim a basketball star, retired NBA player Yao Ming, who played for the Houston Rockets, graduated from Nanyang, something that makes the boys very proud.

“Yeah, he’s a hero of China basketball,” said Wang, translating for Nanyang captain Meng Shen Ling.

There was even a moment of international diplomacy as the two teams exchanged gifts.

For the Williamsport Millionaires and their fans getting a chance to be a part of this experience is something they won’t soon forget.

“It’s wonderful,” said Amy Mahon of Williamsport. “It's really exciting. It's a great opportunity for the community and the school.”

“I want them to come here, knowing that they played us, saying that they had a great time, playing the Millionaires in the United States and bring it back to china,” said Coleman.

“Americans are very friendly,” Wang translated for Ling.

While the team is here they plan to sightsee in Washington, D.C., New York City.

And of course, while in Williamsport, they visited the Little League Hall of Fame Museum.
